GATE-2016

28. The following figure shows a seismic reflection experiment above a reflector that dips 45 , the p-wave velocity in the medium is constant and equal to 2km/s. the source is kept at location 'S' and receiver is kept at location 'G'. the midpoint between S and G is denoted by M and the depth to the reflector from M is 1km. The travel time of the primary reflected arrival recorded at the receiver is equal to........ seconds

Solution:

Reflection at an inclined interface

Travel time of the dipping reflector (tm) =(2*d*cosϴ) / V -----(1)

d- depth to the interface =1000m

V- velocity of the layer = 2000m/s

ϴ -dipping angle = 45˚

These values substitute in eq(1)

tm= (2* 1000*cos45˚) / 2000

tm= cos45˚

tm= 0.707s
