36. The seismic energy released in an earthquake of magnitude Ms=7.0 is about .........times released in an earthquake of Ms=6.0

 A) 10

B) 32

C)64

D)100

Solution:

Gutenberg devised an empirical formula, which relates the energy (E) to the surface wave magnitude
(Ms)

log10 E = 4.8 +1.5 Ms -------------------------(1)

log10 E7 = 4.8 + 1.5 M7

log10 E6= 4.8 + 1.5 M6

         log10E7 = 4.8 + 1.5 * 7 ------------(2)

         log10E6 = 4.8 + 1.5 * 6 ------------(3)

Divide equation (2) by equation (1)

log10 E7 / log10 E6 = 15.3/13.8

E7/ E6 = 1015.3 / 1013.8

               = 1015.3 – 13.8

              =101.5

        Therefore. E7 = 32.62 E6
