POROSITY PROBLEM

Post a Comment

1. A 10cc sandstone block has mass of 20 grams. If the average density of sand grain is 2.5 gram/ cc then the porosity of sandstone in % will be?

 (Thanks to Achalanand)

Solution:

Volume (V)= 10cc

 mass (m)= 20g

Average density of sand grain is (p)= 2.5 g/cc

What is the porosity of the sandstone is in % ?

Volume of the occupied space (V)= mass /density

                                                      = 20 / 2.5

                                                      =8 cc

Therefore,

Porous Volume = total volume of the sandstone – volume occupied by grains

                                        =10-8

                                        =2 cc

Porosity = Volume of the porous medium / total porous medium

              = 2/ 10

              = 0.2

              = 20%
