75 . The P-wave velocity and the Poisson’s ratio for a homogeneous and isotropic sedimentary rock are 2500 m/s and 0.3, respectively. The S-wave velocity for the rock is ________m/s.

Solution:

The relation between velocity of P-wave , S-wave and Poisson’s ratio is given below

Vp / Vs = ( 2(1-ν) / (1-2ν) ) ----------------(1)

Velocity of the P-wave = 2500 m/s

Poisson’s ratio (ν) = 0.3

Substitute above values in below equation

Vs / Vp = ( (1-2ν) / 2(1-ν) )

Vs = Vp ( ( (1-2ν) / 2(1-ν) ) )

Vs = 2500 ( ( (1-2(0.3) / 2(1-0.3) ) )

Vs = 2500 ( ( (1-0.6) / 2 (0.7 ) )

Vs = 2500 ( ( 0.4 / 1.4 ) )

Vs = 2500 * 0.53

Vs = 1336.30 m/s
