8) On a Photo scale of 1:40,000  a square shaped open cast coal mine of 1 km2 area would have an area of ___ cm2.

(Thanks to Chandrasekhar, ANU)

Solution:

 Given that the scale 1:40,000

  1 cm = 40000 cm

 1 cm = 40,000 * 10-5 km

 1 cm= 0.4 km

  1 km=1/0.4 cm

 1 km = 2.5 cm

From the given data we have 1 km2 area = (2.5 cm)2

                                                        1 km2  = 6.25 cm2
