CSIR-NET 2015 (June)- (88)

CSIR-NET 2015

88. Consider the two time sequences with the elements

a=1, 2, 3, 1, 2
b=1, 3, 5, 7

What are the first two elements of their convolution?

A) 5 , 1                           B) 2, 4                     C) 1, 5                     D) 3, 6

Solution:

Convolution: Is a mathematical way of combing two signals to achieve a third, modified signal. The signal we record seems to reposed well to being treated as a series of signals superimposed upon each other is seismic signal seem to respond convolution-ally.

a= 1, 2, 3, 1, 2
b= 1, 3, 5, 7

                             1     2       3     1      2

          7    5    3     1                                                          1*1= 1

                7    5     3     1                                                   3*1+1*2= 5

                      7     5     3      1                                           5*1+3*2+1*3=14

                             7     5      3      1                                   7*1+5*2+3*3+1*1=27

                                    7      5      3     1                            7*2+5*3+3*1+1*2=34

                                            7      5     3     1                     7*3+5*1+3*2=32

                                                    7     5      3     1              7*1+5*2=17

                                                           7      5      3      1     7*2=14

a*b ={ 1, 5, 14, 27, 34, 32, 17, 14 }

First two elements are {1, 5}

Answer: C
