PROBLEM-4

PROBLEM

Q. The highest frequency range (in Hz) of an inducing electromagnetic wave that can penetrate up to a depth of 178 s in a medium having a resistivity of 10178 ohms. m

Solution:

In an electromagnetic wave hits a conductor, the wave will attenuate as it penetrates the conductor, with a characteristic distance, called the Skin depth (d).

The skin depth depends not only on the conductivity and permittivity but also on the frequency (1/time) of the incident radiation.

Skin depth (d) = 503.8 *√(ρ/f) ---------------(1)

f- frequency = 1/ time

time = 178 s

ρ-resistivity = 10,178 Ωm

substitute above values in eq(1)

d= 503.8 *√(ρ*T)

d= 503.8 * √(10178*178)

d= 503.8 * √(1,811,684)

d= 503.8 * 1345.988

d= 678,108.811 m

Skindepth (d) = 678 km
