  1. A Seismic Reflection Survey is carried out over a 1500 m thick horizontal layer with a P- wave velocity of 2000 m/sec. the travel time of the reflected wave at a surface detector placed 1000 m from a surface source is ________milli seconds.
    (Thanks to Chandrasekhar, ANU)

Sol:
Given that velocity (V) = 2000 m/sec

Thickness of layer (Z) = 1500 m

Distance between source and Receiver (X) = 1000 m

Travel time of the reflected wave (T) = ?

The travel time of a reflected wave for a horizontal layer

$T = \sqrt{\frac{X^{2}+4Z^{2}}{V^{2}}}$

$T = \sqrt{\frac{(1000)^{2}+4(1500)^{2}}{(2000)^{2}}}$

$T = \sqrt{\frac{10^{6}+9\times10^{6}}{4\times10^{6}}}$

$T = \sqrt{\frac{10\times10^{6}}{4\times10^{6}}}$

$T = \sqrt{2.5}$

T= 1.5811 seconds

T = 1581.1 milli seconds
