GATE-2020

25) A seismic reflection survey is carried out using a 10 milli seconds wavelet over a subsurface medium having an average P-wave velocity of 1600 m/sec. The best resolution which is obtained on the basis of Rayleigh criteria is _______m

(Thanks to Chandrasekhar, ANU)

Solution:

Given that time (t) = 10 milli seconds=0.01 seconds

Velocity ($V_ {p} $) = 1600 m/s

The Best resolution ($\frac{\lambda}{4}$)= ?

We know that c= f$\lambda$

$\lambda= \frac{c}{f}$

$\lambda$=ct

$\lambda$=(1600)(0.01)

$\lambda$=16

The best resolution is given by=$\frac{\lambda}{4}$

=$\frac{16}{4}$

= 4m
