GATE-2020

25) A seismic reflection survey is carried out using a 10 milli seconds wavelet over a subsurface medium having an average P-wave velocity of 1600 m/sec. The best resolution which is obtained on the basis of Rayleigh criteria is _______m

(Thanks to Chandrasekhar, ANU)

Solution:

Given that time (t) = 10 milli seconds=0.01 seconds

Velocity (V_ {p} ) = 1600 m/s

The Best resolution (\frac{\lambda}{4})= ?

We know that c= f\lambda

\lambda= \frac{c}{f}

\lambda=ct

\lambda=(1600)(0.01)

\lambda=16

The best resolution is given by=\frac{\lambda}{4}

=\frac{16}{4}

= 4m
