 Q) The Equatorial and Polar radius of the Earth are approximately 6376 km and 6356 km, respectively. The flattening of Earth will be approximately?

(Thanks to Chandrasekhar and Rajkumar)

Solution:

        Given that

        Equatorial radius of the earth(a) = 6376 km

                Polar radius of the earth(c) = 6356

        polar flattening of the earth (f) = ?

we know that   Polar flattening $(f)=\frac{a-c}{a}$

                                     $f=\frac{6376-6356}{6376}$

                                          $=\frac{20}{6376}$

                                        f= 0.003136
